Flexible Tunnel Shed

Applied to the entrances and exits of tunnels, where the mountains are high and the slopes are steep, and where there is a high risk of dangerous rocks and weathered debris falling directly onto the road surface, posing serious hazards.

Understanding the Flexible Tunnel Shed

The flexible tunnel shed is a shed-shaped rockfall protection system composed of supporting structures, metal flexible nets, energy dissipation devices, support ropes and other components. All components can be factory-processed and produced, and assembled on site. It is simple and fast to construct, has a long service life and low construction cost. At the same time, the structure is relatively light, which can be effectively combined with bridges, reducing the requirements for foundation and site conditions, and solving the problem of rockfall protection at the connection of bridges and tunnels where there is no roadbed condition.

The protective capacity of the Flexible Tunnel Shed ranges from 500 kJ to 2000 kJ. When the ultimate protective energy level exceeds 2000 kJ, a special design should be carried out.

Category Introduction

Flexible Tunnel Shed

Flexible overpasses are classified mainly according to the form of the supporting structure, and can be divided into (a) arched flexible overpasses, (b) frame-type flexible overpasses, (c) cantilever-type flexible overpasses, etc. They can also be combined using any of these three forms. The supporting structure materials can be steel, reinforced concrete or other materials.

Flexible Tunnel Shed

Based on the force characteristics and protective effect of the flexible shelter tunnel buffer system, it can be classified into (e) the throw-type tunnel shelter and (f) the interception-type shelter tunnel.

  • The main protective feature of the throw-type shelter tunnel is the area for protecting against rockfalls.
  • The protective feature of the interception-type shelter tunnel is that even when rockfalls fall into the buffer system, they remain within the system.

Main construction requirements

Flexible Tunnel Shed
  • The steel structure part of the arch frame at the outlet of the plate gate should be installed by segmental hoisting. First, install the column base and upright part of the arch frame, then assemble the three sections of the arc-shaped beam on the ground and hoist them up, fitting them together with the uprights. After installing two arch frames, immediately complete the installation of the tie rods and supports between the arch frames.
  • The steel structure part of the middle section of the frame should be installed by means of overall hoisting. On the ground, the arch frame should be assembled as a whole in three sections and then lifted for installation. After each two arch frames are installed, the connection rods and supports between the arch frames should be installed immediately.
  • When steel wire rope components are equipped with buffer units, they should be installed simultaneously with the steel wire rope components.
  • For the base fixed by ground drilling anchor rods, it is advisable to level the installation area’s ground with mortar.
  • When using a grating net, lay the grating net sheets on the uphill side of the support net and make the edges of each net sheet interlock with those of the support net through the binding between the grating net and the support net.
  • The stitching connections between each flexible mesh and between the meshes and the supporting ropes should ensure that every edge mesh hole is connected.

FAQ

Q1: What is a Flexible Tunnel Shed and how does it prevent rockfall at tunnel portals?

A: The Flexible Tunnel Shed is a high-energy absorption structure composed of steel supports, flexible wire mesh, polymer buffer units, and foundation systems. It intercepts falling rocks through dynamic load redistribution, absorbing up to 2,000 kJ impact energy. Designed for steep-slope tunnel entrances, it addresses hazards like weathered rocks and unstable cliffs above roads.

Q2: What materials ensure the shed’s durability in harsh environments?

A: The system uses:

  • Galvanized steel supports (ISO 1461, ≥85μm coating)

  • High-tensile wire mesh (8mm diameter)

  • Polyurethane buffer rings with 30% compression resistance

  • Reinforced concrete foundations (C30 grade)
This ensures 50+ years of service life even in extreme UV or freeze-thaw cycles.

Q3: Is the Flexible Tunnel Shed certified for engineering projects?

A: Yes. It complies with TB/T 3449 (impact testing), JT/T 1318 (industry standard).

Q4: How long does it take to install the Flexible Tunnel Shed in the maintenance area?

The Flexible Tunnel Shed typically lasts for 40 days and is suitable for rapid repair of road sections.

Q5: What are the maintenance costs over 20 years?

A: Costs are 90% lower than concrete sheds:

  • Annual visual inspections (check buffer wear)

  • Replace buffer units every 10-15 years (pre-stocked parts)

  • No structural repairs needed under normal conditions

Q6: Can the shed be customized for narrow mountain tunnels?

A: Yes. We offer:

  • Width customization (4m to 20m)

  • Asymmetric designs for uneven terrain

  • Real-time load simulation tools for engineers

Q7: What is the lead time for projects in Southeast Asia?

A: Regular Flexible Tunnel Shed orders are delivered within 25 days . Urgent orders (≤15 days) incur a 10% surcharge.

Relatde Products

By combining the steel columns and the steel wire mesh, a complete structure is formed, providing slope protection for the protected area. This prevents the falling of collapsing rocks and serves as a slope protection measure.

It is mainly used for protecting small rockfalls and foreign objects from invading on the slopes of road cuts. Its components are independent replaceable units, which facilitate installation and replacement.

This device is applicable to mountainous areas with buffer zones near building facilities. It can prevent rockfalls, flying rocks, avalanches, and mudslides from entering the building facilities, thus avoiding the damage caused by disasters to the building facilities.

This product  is installed in the gully and is used to intercept the materials carried by debris flows.
This product is a flexible barrier structure, mainly consisting of a tension anchor system, energy dissipation device, steel columns, upper and lower support ropes, anti-sedimentation device, and flexible metal net.
